What paper work do I need to bring/ fill in in order to be on an appropriate tax code?
when starting a new job an employee needs to ensure they provide us with P45 from the previous employer as it will give us the tax code plus the details of how much they’ve earned and how much tax they’ve paid so far in the current tax year. If they don’t have a P45 form - because they haven’t received it yet/ of because this is their first job in UK- then they need to ask the new employee to give them P46 form which they will have to fill in.

What do I need to do in order to claim overpaid tax?
If an employee overpaid tax in previous tax year, there is only one way to claim it back and that is by calling Inland Revenue office on 0845 300 0627 the employee tax helpline (the employee tax helpline) where they will be given instructions on what documents will have to be sent. Inland revenue will look into each case separately and determine whether any tax is owed to the employee.

Why am I on BR tax code (Basic rate)
There are two reasons why an employee might be on a Basic Rate tax code:
-
An employee doesn’t provide us with P45 or P46 from. We are then obliged to put an employee on a BR tax code until we receive an appropriate paperwork. Without P45 or P46 we are not able to determine the correct tax code.
-
An employee fills in a P46 and ticks box C which indicates that they currently have another job or receive a state or occupational pension.
